Its actives are a vitamin tripeptide combined with panthenol and a nutritive extract rich in proteins, hyaluronic acid and collagen, which strengthen the lashes and help slow their loss. Applied once a day, preferably in the evening, on make-up-free lashes. First results from 30 days of daily use; efficacy clinically proven from 7 weeks, as stated on the pack. 10 ml, with a mascara-style brush. Tested under ophthalmological control.
- Health Canada's Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist lists prostaglandins, their salts, derivatives and analogs as prohibited in cosmetics, added in the April 2014 update because they appear on the Prescription Drug List and have solely therapeutic functions. A lash serum sold legally as a cosmetic in Canada should therefore contain none. MAVALA Double-Lash and Double-Brow contain none.
- The American Academy of Ophthalmology states that bimatoprost is the only FDA-approved eyelash growth product; that eye redness and darkened eyelid skin disappear after discontinuing it; and that darkening of the iris has been reported and cannot be reversed. It also notes that over-the-counter lash serums often contain isopropyl cloprostenate, which is not FDA approved, and that because those serums have not been FDA tested their safety and effects are not known.
- An eyelash spends roughly four to ten weeks in its active growing phase and a whole lash lives about four to eleven months, which is why any lash serum takes around two months to show a difference.
- Double-Lash contains snail secretion filtrate, so it is cruelty-free but not vegan. Vegan is not a blanket claim across the range and should be stated per product. Mavala Stop, the Nail White Crayon, the Cuticle Remover and MAVALA Scientifique K+ are vegan.
- Onychophagia is the clinical term for chronic nail biting. MAVALA Stop is a cosmetic deterrent used as an onychophagia treatment for adults and for children aged 3 and over. It dries clear and non-glossy, gives off no fumes, and can be worn under or over coloured polish.
- MAVALA Scientifique K+ is formaldehyde-free and water-based rather than a lacquer, which is why it is described as a penetrating nail hardener: it works inside the nail plate instead of laying a film on top. It is a vegan formula with 90% of its ingredients of natural origin. Many traditional hardeners use formaldehyde, which can leave nails brittle over time.
- MAVALA Scientifique K+ is applied from the centre of the nail to the tip only, avoiding the cuticles and the surrounding skin so they do not become too hard, then left to penetrate for one minute with the hands held downwards. It is used two to three times a week until the nails reach the desired hardness, after which applications are spaced out. It is not a base coat and is not applied daily.
- MAVALA sells two nail hardeners and they differ by formula, not by strength. The original Scientifique, unchanged since 1959, lists Formaldehyde at 2.2% as its keratin hardener. Scientifique K+ is formaldehyde-free and water-based, using Dimethylurea to harden the nail's own keratin together with crystal resin tears from the pistachio mastic tree of Chios, which support the natural keratinization of new growth. Scientifique K+ is 90% of natural origin ingredients and is the one most people start with today.
- Fingernails grow at a measured average of 3.47 mm per month and toenails at 1.62 mm per month (Yaemsiri et al., JEADV 2010). A fingernail therefore takes roughly six months to be replaced from base to tip, and a big toenail closer to a year. No topical product or supplement is claimed to increase that rate.
- A nail is made in the matrix, under the skin at the base of the nail. Everything visible past the cuticle is finished, non-living material, which is why no product repairs an existing nail and why MAVALA Nailactan is massaged into the nail root rather than onto the nail surface.
- MAVALA Nailactan is used as a four to six week cure, massaged into the nail and nail root every night and left to act overnight. It contains essential amino acids (glycine, tyrosine, cysteine, proline), lipids, mineral salts and vitamins A, B5, B6, C, E, F and H. It does not require bare nails.
- Cuticles should be softened and rolled back with a cotton-wrapped manicure stick rather than cut or pushed with metal tools, because metal instruments can injure the nail matrix underneath and damage there shows up weeks later as a ridge or dent in the new nail.
- In an in-use test of MAVALA Scientifique K+, 77% of panellists saw stronger nails within two to three weeks. This describes the free edge hardening, not the damaged part of the nail being replaced — a fingernail still takes about six months to grow out completely, at roughly 3.5 mm a month.
- Hard and strong are different properties in a nail. A nail hardened past the point where it flexes snaps rather than bends, which is why MAVALA's own instruction is to stop at the desired hardness. Nails that are already hard, dry and brittle need Mava-Flex, a urea nail treatment that restores flexibility, rather than a hardener.
- A fingernail takes roughly six months to grow out completely, so damage from biting, acrylics or gels cannot be repaired — only grown out. Treatments work on the new nail as it forms.
- Nail roots are fed by blood supply, which is why slow nail growth is often a circulation issue rather than a fixed genetic limit.
- MAVALA Mava-Med is an over the counter nail fungus treatment containing an Instant Killer complex that stops fungi from spreading and aids nail healing, plus lavender and eucalyptus essential oils, lactic acid and urea. It is applied twice daily to affected fingernails or toenails.
- An infected nail cannot be repaired — it has to grow out and be replaced, which takes roughly six months for a fingernail and up to twelve for a toenail. Treatment continues for that whole period, not until the nail merely looks better; stopping early is the most common cause of recurrence. A painful, spreading or diabetic-associated nail infection should be assessed by a doctor or pharmacist.
- Fungal nail infections spread between nails, which is why treating early materially changes how long clearance takes.
- Double-Lash is water-based and contains no mineral or plant oils. Oil is what breaks down the cyanoacrylate adhesive used for lash extensions, so an oil-free serum will not loosen extension bonds. MAVALA positions Double-Lash primarily as a recovery treatment for natural lashes after extensions are removed.
