How to Strengthen Weak Nails: The 12-Week Plan

You cannot repair a weak nail — the part you can see is already made, and it will stay weak until it has grown off the end of your finger. What a treatment plan does is harden the free edge so the nail survives long enough to grow, and improve the quality of the new nail forming underneath. Fingernails grow at roughly 3.5 mm a month, so twelve weeks is about how long it takes for half the visible nail to be new — though in an in-use test, 77% of panellists saw stronger nails within two to three weeks, which is the free edge responding long before the nail is replaced. Below is the routine, what each block of four weeks should look like, and the four mistakes that stop a nail hardener working.

Why nails break at the tip — and why harder is not stronger

A nail plate is made of three layers of compacted keratin, produced at the matrix under the base of the nail and then pushed forward. By the time you can see it, it is finished material — there are no cells in it to heal. That single fact governs everything below: nothing applied to a nail repairs it, because there is nothing living there to repair.

It also explains where nails fail. The free edge, the part past the fingertip, is the oldest and most exposed part of the plate and the only part with nothing underneath it. Water and solvents work their way between the layers there, the layers separate, and the nail flakes, peels or splits. MAVALA’s own product description makes the same point in one line: the tip of the nail is the most fragile, most unprotected part of the nail, and it is therefore the part that needs to be strengthened.

Which brings up the thing almost nobody selling nail treatments will tell you: hard and strong are not the same property. A strong nail bends slightly and returns. A nail that has been hardened past that point does not bend at all, so instead of flexing when it catches on something it snaps clean off. Anyone who has over-treated their nails knows the feeling — nails that look glassy and behave like dry pasta.

This is not a hypothetical risk. MAVALA’s own instructions for Scientifique K+ tell you to keep it off the cuticles and the skin around the nail specifically so those do not get too hard, and to space applications out once the nails reach the hardness you want. A hardener is a course of treatment with a finishing point, not a product you use forever at full frequency.

The 12-week routine

Eight steps, three of which are about what not to do. The frequency matters more than the quantity, and the calendar is set by how fast a nail grows rather than by the product.

  1. Start from a bare, clean, oil-free nail

    Take off all polish with a nail polish remover and wash and dry your hands. A penetrating hardener has to reach the nail plate, and anything sitting on top of it — old polish, a ridge of base coat, the hand cream you put on ten minutes ago — stops it. This is the most common reason a bottle appears not to work. Do the hand cream afterwards.

  2. File them short before you start, in one direction

    Length is leverage. A weak nail that is long will snap before it has a chance to strengthen, and every break costs you weeks of visible progress. Take them down to just past the fingertip and file in one direction rather than sawing back and forth, which works the layers apart at exactly the edge you are trying to hold together. You will grow them out later; the first block is about keeping what you have.

  3. Apply from the centre of the nail to the tip only — then hold your hands down for a minute

    Brush it from the middle of the nail outwards to the tip. Do not take it onto the cuticle or the skin around the nail: MAVALA’s instruction is to avoid them so they do not get too hard, and a hard cuticle splits rather than seals. Then turn your hands so the fingers point down and leave it for a minute. That minute is not drying time — the formula is water-based and works inside the plate rather than setting as a film on top of it, so it is absorption time, and gravity is doing half the work.

  4. Two to three times a week — not every day

    MAVALA’s directions are two to three applications a week until the nails reach the hardness you want. Daily use does not get you there faster; it gets you past the point you were aiming for. A hardener is a treatment with a course, not a base coat you reapply with every manicure.

  5. Feed the nail overnight on the days in between

    Hardening treats the tip. It does nothing for the plate behind it or for the matrix that is making the new nail, and those are what determine the quality of everything that grows in over the next three months. On the nights you are not hardening, massage a nutritive nail cream into the nail and the nail root and leave it to work overnight. MAVALA describes that as a four-to-six-week cure, which fits neatly inside the first block of this plan.

  6. If you wear colour, the hardener goes on first — and a base coat over it

    Hardener on bare nails, its minute to penetrate, then base coat, then polish. The hardener is not a base coat and does not replace one: a fortifying base coat covers the whole plate to reinforce it and hold the colour, which is a different job from hardening the free edge. If your nails yellow under dark shades, the layer you want between the pigment and the nail is a protective base coat, not more hardener.

  7. Reassess at week four, and again at week eight

    Look at the base of the nail, not the tip. The band of new growth coming out of the cuticle is the only honest measure of progress — the part that was damaged when you started is still damaged and will be until it has grown off the end. Two things to check: are you breaking less often, and does the nail still bend a little before it resists? If it has stopped bending entirely, you have gone past strong into rigid.

  8. When they reach the hardness you want, space the applications out

    This is MAVALA’s own instruction and it is the step people skip in the other direction — not stopping too early, but never stopping at all. Once the nails are where you want them, drop to a maintenance rhythm rather than continuing at full frequency. If they have gone hard but brittle and are snapping rather than bending, stop hardening altogether for a few weeks and work on flexibility instead; a nail that is too hard is exactly as fragile as one that is too soft, for the opposite reason.

What to expect, four weeks at a time

Weeks 1–4

Nothing much to see, and that is correct

At an average of about 3.5 mm a month, four weeks buys you roughly three and a half millimetres of new nail — a band at the base you have to look for. The tips may already feel firmer, and you may be catching and tearing less, but the nail you are looking at is still almost entirely the nail you started with. This is the block people abandon because nothing is happening. Something is happening; it is just happening under the cuticle — and at the tips, where an in-use test found 77% of panellists reporting stronger nails within two to three weeks.

Weeks 5–8

The line becomes visible

Around seven millimetres in, most people can see where the old nail ends and the new one begins — often as a change in thickness or in how the light sits on it. Breaks should be noticeably less frequent by now. This is the other place people stop, for the opposite reason: the nails look better. They look better because the new growth is better. The part that was making them break is still at the end of your finger.

Weeks 9–12

More than half the nail is new

Ten to eleven millimetres of new growth is, for most people, more than half the visible nail. The damaged section has moved far enough forward that you can start filing it off rather than waiting for it, which is the first point in the plan where you get to remove the problem instead of outgrowing it. If the nails have reached the hardness you wanted, this is where you space the hardener out.

After twelve weeks

Maintenance, not intensive care

A fingernail takes roughly six months to be replaced from base to tip, so twelve weeks is halfway rather than finished. What changes is the effort: a hardener once a week or less, a nutritive cream when the nails look dry rather than nightly, and a base coat under colour as a permanent habit. If you are still breaking after three months of this, the cause is more likely to be something you are doing daily — water, solvents, gel removal — than the treatment.

The four mistakes that stop a nail hardener working

None of these is exotic. Between them they account for most of the reviews that say a hardener did nothing.

  1. Painting the whole nail, cuticles included

    The instinct is to treat a weak nail everywhere. MAVALA’s directions say the opposite: from the centre of the nail to the tip only, avoiding the cuticles and the skin around the nail, so that those do not get too hard. The free edge is where the plate delaminates and breaks, so it is where the treatment belongs. A hardened cuticle is not a protected cuticle — it is one that splits and hangs.

  2. Using it daily, like a base coat

    Two to three times a week is the instruction, and it exists because the effect accumulates in the nail rather than sitting on it. Applying it every day does not shorten the twelve weeks — the timeline is set by how fast the nail grows, which nothing you paint on changes. What daily use does change is where you end up on the hard-to-flexible scale, and it is not the end you want.

  3. Applying it over polish, or over hand cream

    A penetrating hardener has one requirement: contact with the nail plate. Any film in the way — polish, a base coat, a ridge filler, an oil, the hand cream from earlier — and it works on that instead. This is why the first step of the routine is to clean the nail thoroughly rather than simply take the colour off, and why the hand cream comes afterwards.

  4. Stopping at week five — or never stopping at all

    Both failure modes are common and they look like opposites. Stopping when the nails start to look better means quitting with two-thirds of the damaged nail still attached to your finger. Continuing at full frequency forever means passing the point where the nail bends, at which point it stops flexing and starts snapping. MAVALA’s instruction covers this: continue until the nails have the hardness you want, then space applications out.

Which treatment you actually need

Hardener, base coat, serum and cream are four different jobs, and the shelf does not make that obvious. Match the product to what the nail is doing rather than to how bad it looks.

  • Soft, bending nails that will not grow past the fingertip

    The core of this plan. Water-based rather than a lacquer, so it works inside the nail plate instead of laying a film on top: Dimethylurea hardens the nail’s own keratin, and crystal resin tears from the pistachio mastic tree of Chios support the keratinisation of the new nail as it forms. Formaldehyde-free, vegan, 90% of ingredients of natural origin. Free edge only, two to three times a week.

  • Nails that split or peel into layers, especially under polish

    a fortifying base coat

    A different job from hardening: this covers the whole plate rather than the tip, reducing micro-flaking and dehydration at the surface and giving colour something to hold onto. Tea tree oil, vitamin E, hydrolysed soy and wheat proteins and arginine, with the same mastic resin. Use it under polish; use the hardener under it.

  • Dry, dull, brittle nails after weather, water or detergents

    The overnight half of the routine, and the only item here that treats the matrix rather than the plate. Amino acids, lipids and vitamins A, B5, B6, C, E, F and H, massaged into the nail and the nail root nightly as a four-to-six-week cure. This is what improves the quality of what grows in, which is the whole point of a twelve-week plan.

  • Nails that are hard but snap instead of bending

    The one people do not know exists, and the answer when hardening has gone too far or when nails are dry and rigid to begin with. Urea and saccharides to restore the moisture balance, calcium, lemon essential oil and vitamin B5. Twice a week on bare nails, ideally at bedtime. If your nails are already too hard, this is the opposite of what you have been reaching for, and it is the right one.

  • Nails that grow very slowly

    Nail roots are fed by blood supply, which is why slow growth is often circulation rather than a fixed limit. Wheat germ, olive and sweet almond oils, massaged into the skin below the half-moon. Relevant on a twelve-week plan for the obvious reason: everything here is measured in millimetres of new nail.

  • Nails that yellow or stain under dark colours

    Keeps pigment from reaching the nail plate, and the tacky formula holds the manicure longer so you strip it off less often — which matters more than it sounds, because remover is one of the things drying out the free edge in the first place.

The specific case: after acrylics, gels or dip powder

Enhancement damage is not a different condition, but it arrives all at once rather than gradually, and it comes with a particular temptation: to fix the appearance immediately. Almost everything that does that makes the recovery longer.

Do not buff them smooth. The ridged, uneven surface left behind is thin plate, and buffing it flat removes more of the layers you have left. Do not file the white patches off, and do not pick at any product still adhering — take it off with a proper remover or have it removed professionally. And keep them short, for the whole first block: a thin nail at length is a nail waiting for a doorframe.

Beyond that the routine is the one above, unchanged. Hardener on the free edge two to three times a week; a nutritive cream nightly for the first four to six weeks; a fortifying base coat under any colour rather than bare polish on a compromised plate.

The realistic timeline is the one the growth rate gives you, not the one the internet gives you. Nothing repairs the part of the nail that was damaged — it grows out, at roughly 3.5 mm a month, which is why a full fingernail is usually quoted at around six months. What twelve weeks buys you is a nail that is more than half new, and the point at which you can file the rest off.
